Big Buddy Wraps up Successful Summer Enrichment Program - Jul 18, 2007

East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) students experienced a “Super Healthy Summer” as part of Big Buddy’s Summer Enrichment Program.  Classes wrapped up in July.  Kindergarten through eighth grade students participated in the program at McKinley High School and Capitol Middle School, during June and July.

All activities and special programs focused on nutrition and teaching children about a healthy lifestyle.  Character education, including anger management techniques and developing self-esteem, were also part of daily activities.

This year over 1,000 students participated in Big Buddy’s Summer Enrichment Program. “We were surprised by the number of students that participated this year.  It was a challenge, but we are extremely excited about the success of the summer program,” said Executive Director Gaylynn Mack.  Kindergarten through fifth grade students attended classes at McKinley High School, while sixth through eighth grade students were housed at Capitol Middle School.

As a partner with EBRPSS, Big Buddy targets students who will benefit most from the program.  The academic portion is taught by teachers from around the area, including those from EBRPSS.  Classes are also designed to be aligned with the State’s Comprehensive Curriculum.  Pre and post-assessments of student skills in math and reading are done to determine the appropriate intensity of the courses for each student.

Students also participated in recreational activities which reinforced the healthy living theme.
