BREC, School System Hold Park, Walking Trail Grand Opening
- November 10, 2011
On Wednesday, November 9, the Recreation and Park Commission of East Baton Rouge Parish and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) held a grand opening for the Woodlawn Neighborhood Park and its walking trails at 14939 Tiger Road. The two partners joined in a cooperative endeavor in 2010 in which the district provides the land at the corner of Jones Creek Road and Tiger Bend Road for BREC to develop as a park and for recreation as a benefit to both Woodlawn Middle School and the community.
Those participating in the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony at the head of the Woodlawn Walking Trail were (pictured, left to right): East Baton Rouge Parish School Board member Connie Bernard, School Board President Barbara Freiberg, School Board member Evelyn Ware-Jackson, School Board member Jill C. Dyason, BREC Assistant Superintendent Dale Auzenne, Woodlawn Middle School Assistant Principal Paula Sisson, EBRPSS Chief Business Operations Officer Catherine Fletcher, Rep. Mack "Bodi" White and Woodlawn Middle School Gifted site coordinator Cindy Phillips.
The school has exclusive use of the land 6 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, in general, with BREC having exclusive use during the daylight hours after regular school hours, weekends and every day during the summer when school is not in session. The construction costs of about $86,850 include a quarter-mile walking path and picnic pavilion. Park improvements were made possible by the Imagine Your Parks tax passed by voters in 2004.
