Teacher Impresses Erin Gruwell of The Freedom Writers Diary
- December 10, 2008
A Glen Oaks High School English teacher is trying to change students' lives like the teacher in the book The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. This fall, Derrick Barrow traveled to Los Angeles for a fall conference on Teaching and Learning. While there, he met his 'idol' and the keynote speaker, Erin Gruwell. Gruwell is the English teacher upon which the book and the movie is based. She was so taken by Barrow's commitment to his students, she gave him an all-expense-paid trip so he could return to Los Angeles in the summer 2009 and attend The Freedom Writers Institute. This is a five-day seminar. Barrow recently received the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Award by the Cortana Wal-Mart and the Coca Cola Teacher of the Week Award from Baton Rouge Coca-Cola.
