Istrouma High’s JROTC Wins First Place at State Competition First Time the School Has Had a Drill Team Compete in 10-Plus Years

Although Istrouma High School has not had a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) team compete at the state level in more than 10 years, the school’s drill team won first place in February in the state’s Unarmed Drill Exhibition. The Louisiana JROTC State Drill Meet, held at Northwestern State University, included 29 school JROTC teams in competition.
Also among the teams representing the East Baton Rouge Parish School System were: Belaire, Glen Oaks, Northeast, Scotlandville Magnet, Tara and Woodlawn high schools.
Istrouma High Schools JROTC Drill Team members are: Deonte Washington, Benjamin Washington, Justin Wilson, Omarr Tezano, Ron Carter, Torrance Harris, Diamond Fields, Adrien Northern, Catherine Bently, Shammikia Foster, Destany Williams and Raquel Parker. The team is coached by Sgt. First Class Mickey McBride and Mstr. Sgt. Luciano Malone.
Principal Brister in Washington, D.C., to Accept McKinley Middle School’s Second Blue Ribbon Award
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Principal Herman Brister (pictured, left) and the school’s Teacher of the Year, Lynn Williamson (right), were in Washington, D.C., accepting McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School’s National Blue Ribbon Award from U.S. Department of Education’s Director of National Blue Ribbon Schools Program Aba Kumi (center).
