Band, Dancers, Volunteers Kick Off School Year at Istrouma High School with Parade, Fair

Band members tooted their horns, dancers strutted their stuff and decorated cars and trucks three candy to children on Saturday, August 6, during Istrouma High School’s Back-to-School Community Parade and Fair. The school’s Dazzlin’ Dolls, including (first photo, left to right) Nakeitha Orange, Torion James and Torin Baxter, were all smiles as they danced through the parade route. The parade also featured special guests like East Baton Rouge Parish Councilwoman Denise Marcelle, district Superintendent John Dilworth, School Board members Barbara Freiberg (president) and Veretta Lee and school partners like Entergy. Afterwards, a fair was held at the school with booths sponsored by community groups and businesses, such as ExxonMobil. They included United Healthcare of Louisiana, (second photo, left to right) represented by Pat Leduff, Charlisa Watson plus Tamara Hardnett of DIVAS Social Club, which donated 800 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in need.
Principal Brister in Washington, D.C., to Accept McKinley Middle School’s Second Blue Ribbon Award
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Principal Herman Brister (pictured, left) and the school’s Teacher of the Year, Lynn Williamson (right), were in Washington, D.C., accepting McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School’s National Blue Ribbon Award from U.S. Department of Education’s Director of National Blue Ribbon Schools Program Aba Kumi (center). The event, which recognized some 314 schools from across the United States, was held at the Omni Hotel. Click herefor story.
