The Latest Buzz: Spelling Bee Named Six Top Spellers

At the second annual Spelling Bee, a student from Buchanan Elementary School and one from Scotlandville Elementary School walked away as the top spellers in their categories among more than 100 entrants. The East Baton Rouge Parish School System event was held December 3 for second and third graders and December 4 for fourth and fifth graders.

The System’s elementary associate superintendents, Paula Johnson and Paula Fabre, organized the event. Special thanks are extended to the judges: Richard Capps, administrative director of the School System’s Federal Programs; Kathi Gill and Joni Herrmann of Neighbors Federal Credit Union; Diane Helire, the System’s SES coordinator; Lee Dixon, director of the System’s ESS; and Sandra Horton, local No Child Left Behind director. Pronouncers included: Sylvia Winer, Angela Conant and Heather Werth.
Principal Brister in Washington, D.C., to Accept McKinley Middle School’s Second Blue Ribbon Award
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Principal Herman Brister (pictured, left) and the school’s Teacher of the Year, Lynn Williamson (right), were in Washington, D.C., accepting McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School’s National Blue Ribbon Award from U.S. Department of Education’s Director of National Blue Ribbon Schools Program Aba Kumi (center). The event, which recognized some 314 schools from across the United States, was held at the Omni Hotel. Click herefor story.
