Literacy Night a Spook-Tacular Success at Merrydale Elementary
- November 6, 2009
Teachers and staff at Merrydale Elementary School recently held a “Boo-ook” Literacy Night of Characters to coincide with the Halloween holiday. It involved Pre-K through second-grade students and their parents, who participated in Literacy Stations appropriate for each grade level. Every child took home a literacy activity, a book, a pencil and an application for a public library card. In keeping with the spooky theme, teachers and volunteers, like those from the school’s partner the Altrusa Club (pictured), dressed up like various book characters. Some students were in costume, as well. Plus, Yvonne Byrd from the Greenwell Springs Road branch of the public library told stories dressed as an African princess. The school’s reading coach, Bridgette Hinton, chaired the event.
