Several EBRPSS Students Add a Winning Color to Their Palette Participating in the 2011 LSBA District Art Contest

First-Place District Winners: 1-Arielle Williams’ The Blue Possum, 2-Kayla Richardson’s Cultural Fusion and 3-Phillip Hahn’s Gator
With about 89 entries from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS), three public school students walked away first-place winners, four second-place winners, three third-place winners and seven honorable mention winners in the 2011 Louisiana School Boards Association’s (LSBA) District Level Art Contest held this month.
Now the winners go on to the state competition representing the East Baton Rouge School Board at the LSBA Convention at the Crowne Plaza in Baton Rouge March 2-4. Artwork will be displayed at the convention, including the first-, second- and third-place state winners at each of the three grade levels.
Some students entered the district contest, which had three grade levels, more than once. Each piece of artwork had to represent Louisiana (scenes, products, buildings, people, etc.) and be created with regulation mediums (oil, acrylic, watercolor, pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, crayon, colored pencil, batik or stitchery).
EBRPSS winners included:
First Place Arielle Williams, third grade, Parkview Elementary – The Blue Possum Kayla Richardson, eighth grade, Westdale Middle – Cultural Fusion Phillip Hahn, 12th grade, McKinley High – Gator
Second Place Jayla McCrea, first grade, Greenbrier Elementary – Brown Pelican Cindy Zhuang, sixth grade, Woodlawn Middle – Bayou Sunset Maura Dupre, seventh grade, McKinley Middle – Louisiana Gumbo Truc-Anh Phan, 11th grade, Tara High – Louisiana Tree of Life: The Live Oak
Third Place Jonathan Ding, first grade, Buchanan Elementary – Bullfrog Prasiddha Karki, eighth grade, Glasgow Middle – Swamp Friendship Nicholas Lopez, 11th grade, Woodlawn High – Voodoo Queen

Principal Brister in Washington, D.C., to Accept McKinley Middle School’s Second Blue Ribbon Award
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Principal Herman Brister (pictured, left) and the school’s Teacher of the Year, Lynn Williamson (right), were in Washington, D.C., accepting McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School’s National Blue Ribbon Award from U.S. Department of Education’s Director of National Blue Ribbon Schools Program Aba Kumi (center).
