‘Conjunction Junction’ Just a Sample of ‘Schoolhouse Rock’ Musical

Sixty-nine fifth graders at Baton Rouge Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (BRCVPA) will be “rocking around” to the music of “Schoolhouse Rock” May 7 and 8 at the school. Students will be performing the musical, a part of The Broadway Junior Collection based on the 1970s educational TV series Schoolhouse Rock” and its music, at 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday. Admission is free.
The play is the story of a nervous teacher named Tom, played by BRCVPA teacher Jackie Clayton, who discovers an interesting way to teach his students. “When we started rehearsing, I was sort of like Tom -- freaked out. But now, like he was, I’m fresh and ready for this job,” Clayton said.
The roles of the other five characters are shared by students Khoi Truong, Lauren Gaines, Maura Dupre’, Riley Dunaway, Alyssa Catanese, Summer Hayes, Tre’Lance Scott, Molly Scott, Emma Pittman, Danny Norris, Jori Gardner, Summer West, Devin Barnes, Madison Gilmore, Crystal Saravia and Micalah Green.
Besides “Conjunction Junction, What’s You’re Function,” other TV series songs to be featured will include: “I’m Just A Bill,” “Interplanet Janet” and “Unpack Your Adjectives.” The school’s student orchestra, joined by Principal Mark Richterman on the cello, will perform the music to accompany singers.

Principal Brister in Washington, D.C., to Accept McKinley Middle School’s Second Blue Ribbon Award
On Tuesday, November 13, 2012, Principal Herman Brister (pictured, left) and the school’s Teacher of the Year, Lynn Williamson (right), were in Washington, D.C., accepting McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School’s National Blue Ribbon Award from U.S. Department of Education’s Director of National Blue Ribbon Schools Program Aba Kumi (center).
