- September 8, 2011
Shaquille O’Neal, who just spent his 20th season in the National Basketball Association playing for the Boston Celtics, made a surprise stop at Polk Elementary School Wednesday, September 7. Principal Cherryl Matthews (pictured at right with O’Neal) said he was in town and simply wanted to visit with students and give them motivation and encouragement to stay in school. “He said ‘do your best and follow your dreams,’” Matthews said.
O’Neal has supported Polk Elementary School over a number of years. He was instrumental in remodeling the school’s library, refurbishing the playground and donating autographed basketballs to be used as incentives for students with good behavior.
