East Baton Rouge Parish School System Announces 2007-2008 Students of the Year
- Feb 21, 08
The 2007-2008 East Baton Rouge Parish Students of the Year and finalists were recognized on February 21, 2008, during the Regular School Board Meeting. Elementary, middle and high schools across the district submitted the names of their top students, as chosen by their school selection committees in the fall. The nominated students provided a portfolio to the district selection committee, which included a writing sample. After judges reviewed the portfolios, the selected students were interviewed and their scores tallied to determine the top student at each level.
The Elementary School Student of Year, Sarah Perkins, is a fifth grade student at Buchanan Elementary School. From dance, to politics, to music, Sarah’s interests are very diverse. She is an accomplished ballet dancer and is also a member of the East Baton Rouge Parish Children’s Choir. Equally diverse are her goals for the future. Sarah says she would like to eventually attend Harvard Law School, but she does not rule out culinary arts school or medical school.
Middle School Student of the Year, Nathan Babb, is a standout soccer player who also enjoys playing the trumpet. An eighth grader at Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School, Nathan has great musical talent. This year he was accepted into the All Parish Honor Band for the second year in a row. Nathan also takes great pride in his academic accomplishments. Nathan is currently taking three courses for high school credit, which are Geometry, Physical Science, and Spanish I.
Maya Bretzius credits the East Baton Rouge Parish School System for sparking her interest in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The High School Student of the Year plans to select this topic as her area of study when she enters college in the fall. Maya is a senior at Baton Rouge Magnet High School where she has taken European History classes and had opportunities to travel to Europe. Maya also has a love of music. She says outside of class, she plays the harp and is active in her church choir.
All student of the year nominees were honored during a reception, sponsored by Neighbors Federal Credit Union, on February 6.
