Baton Rouge- The new Winbourne Elementary School received an official welcome to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. On Thursday, September 27th, Board Members, Superintendent Charlotte Placide, staff, and the community participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The event included singing from Winbourne Elementary music students and many thanks to the planners, architects and community groups who helped get the school off to a successful start. Principal Kandiest Brock says the students and staff are adjusting well. “We are still getting used to things. We are adjusting everyday.”
While classes began as scheduled on August 10th, there was still work to be done on the building. Lightning struck the school during a summer storm which resulted in a six hour fire fight for crews. The unexpected event did not delay students’ arrival for classes. Representatives from the school system and members of the community worked long hours during the days leading up to the first day of school to get the facility ready. “It was truly a community effort,” said Superintendent Charlotte D. Placide.
Winbourne Elementary serves over 600 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth. Among the features included at the site include, Core Academic classrooms, Media Center, Technology Education, Music and Art.
